Look Deeper

Look Deeper, the theme of this year’s TEDxUniversityofNicosia, meets three essential TED Talk objectives:
- To democratize knowledge and science
- To stimulate and arouse audiences around the world
- To spark deep discussion and connections

We believe looking deeper is an essential component of the times in which we currently live in. A component unfortunately, that is all too often ignored. Consider the following facts. Most children grow up aspiring to be celebrities rather than scientists. Although we are richer than 50 years ago, we are not happier. Saturated by talk shows and reality programmes, we are quick to judge on first impressions only.

Loosely inspired by the 1959 book The Sociological Imagination by sociologist C. Wright Mills, Look Deeper aspires to make us see the world objectively, fairly and holistically. In order to look deeper we must ‘think ourselves away’, as Mills argued. We must furthermore, question ourselves as well as our surroundings, whether urban, natural, virtual, or even outer space. By looking deeper we are better equipped to:

- appreciate human failure and achievement
- empathize with others
- comprehend the multiple layers of stories behind what we see at the surface

For this year’s TEDxUniversityofNicosia we have looked deeper ourselves to find the most appropriate speakers and performers in Cyprus and abroad that will all work within one specific conceptual framework, that of looking deeper. We are convinced it is a theme filled with “ideas worth spreading.”
